activities to keep kids busy during school break-escape kit

Things to keep kids busy!

School vacations are approaching fast, and you are looking for ideas to keep your little ones entertained?
It’s not always easy to come up with original activities at low cost.
Fortunately, there are many creative and athletic activities to keep them busy without breaking the bank, hehe.
We have selected for you 7 creative, and cheap activities to entertain the kids during the holidays.
Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, nannies, babysitters… it’s up to you!

1. Organize a treasure hunt

Treasure hunts are one of the favorite activities of children! From digging, charades, riddles, hiding places and wandering around, it’s a fun little activity that is guaranteed to please.

Whether it is for Easter during the egg hunt or a birthday party to find the safe filled with candy, we have all already done a treasure hunt, and what a fun time it was!

Have you ever organized a scavenger hunt yourself for the kids? It’s a real challenge to combine suspense, reflection, and fun!

How to make a treasure hunt?

  • Define the play area

All places are welcome for a fun activity: house, apartment, garden, park, forest…

  • Pick a theme

This option is optional, but you can involve the children by making them choose and adapt the decoration and accessories to the theme. Ideal for more immersion!

For example, if they are fans of the Disney or Marvel universe, order in advance some little prince and princess or superhero accessories and use them for your activity. Are they more of a dinosaur fan? Use archaeology vocabulary like, “The dinosaur fossil is between the mailbox and the backyard gate”. Be creative!

  • Write some hints

You can create as many clues, charades, or riddles as you want. Adapt them according to the number of children, and don’t forget to give some hints to the little ones! 😉 You can create about ten clues and adapt the precision of the hints according to the age group of children.

You can start with: “I’m located somewhere in the house, between the yogurt and eggs… it’s very cold in here” = the fridge. Then proceed to a second clue, which will lead to the third, until the 10th where the treasure will be found.

  • Draw a map for more realism

Psst, no judging and no skill required! Whether you are good at drawing or not, the illustration of the play space should be sketched so that children can find the location.

If the activity takes place in the house, draw the shape of the house with the names of the different rooms, in the garden, draw the house, illustrate the garden fence, the garage, etc…

This map will allow your little wolves to find their way throughout their investigation, but especially to put crosses in the places where they will find a clue, to avoid going back and wasting time.

  • Bring a treasure for them to enjoy!

What would a treasure hunt be without… a treasure? For this, nothing could be easier than a shoebox, a cardboard box or a small bag as a safe! You will fill this safe with candies, chocolate coins, gifts, or other knick-knacks of your choice.
This birthday animation is ideal to dynamize the party and make the children live a playful adventure.

3. Create a cookie bakery

This cooking activity is perfect to spend the afternoon at home while having fun. Whether it’s scooping the dough, making pretty little dough balls, decorating or tasting, something tells us that your kids will love giving you a hand with this activity!

Atelier Cookies Enfants

Ingredients (about 20 delicious cookies):

  • 170g flour
  • 100g butter
  • 90g brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1 pinch of vanilla powder
  • 1/2 packet of baking powder
  • Chocolate chips (or M&M’s according to taste)

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 °F/180 degrees.
  2. Put the brown sugar, salt and vanilla in a bowl and add the egg and melted butter.
  3. Gradually add the flour and baking powder, then add the chocolate chips or M&M’s. If the dough is too sticky, add more flour. The dough is ready when it pulls away from the sides and forms a ball on the spoon.
  4. Line a baking sheet with baking paper and have the children spoon the dough into balls and flatten them. Remember to space the balls apart as they will spread out while baking 😉
  5. Bake for 10-12 minutes at 350 °F/180 degrees. Be careful, you need to keep a close eye on the baking. The cookies are done when they start to crack on top. All you will have to do is enjoy them!

4. Customize tie and dye t-shirt

Do you know what the best way to start the summer vacations is? Having colorful and personalized clothes.

In summer, it’s time to say goodbye to the big sweaters and scarfs and hello to shorts, tee-shirts and flip-flops! Speaking of wardrobe, what if we gave it a makeover? Do you see where we’re going with this? 😉

During this activity, your little monsters are free. The concept is simple: decorate a white t-shirt with colors and patterns they like!

To do this, you’ll need:

  • An old or new t-shirt (preferably white and 100% cotton, the dye will be more effective)
  • A fork (optional)
  • 3 empty bottles
  • 3 food or textile dyes of different colors
  • 1 bottle filled with water
  • 4 large rubber bands (per t-shirt)

How to do it?

  1. Lay the t-shirt out on a table, point the fork at the middle of it and spin it until the t-shirt is twisted.
  2. Preserve the position of the t-shirt by removing the fork and add the rubber bands, so that they all cross in the center.
  3. Divide the different dyes into empty bottles and add water (if you want the color to be bright, reduce the amount of water).
  4. Once the bottles are filled with water-diluted dye, spread the dyes as desired.
  5. Let the shirt dry outside for 24 hours and rinse with cold water.

Congratulations! The whole family has a new trendy t-shirt for summer.

5. Play with an at-home Escape Room
